Växtzonen, often translated as "plant hardiness zone" or "growing zone," is a geographical area that has a specific range of minimum winter temperatures. This system is used to determine which plants are most likely to survive the winter in a particular location. The concept originated in the United States and has been adapted in various forms in different countries.

In Sweden, the concept of växtzon is crucial for gardeners and farmers. The Swedish system divides the country into several zones, with zone 1 being the mildest and typically located in the southernmost parts of the country, and higher numbered zones indicating progressively colder winters. The zones are determined by factors such as average minimum winter temperatures, but also consider other climatic conditions like snow cover and wind.

The primary purpose of the växtzon system is to guide the selection of perennial plants. Plants are assigned a specific växtzon rating, indicating the coldest zone they can tolerate. A gardener can then consult the växtzon map for their area to choose plants that are suited to their local climate. For example, if a plant is rated for zone 4, it is expected to survive winters in any area designated as zone 4 or milder (zones 1, 2, and 3). Planting a plant outside its recommended zone can lead to winter damage or death.

While växtzon is a valuable tool, it is not the sole determinant of plant success. Microclimates, such as the protection offered by a building or a dense planting, can create slightly warmer conditions than the general zone indicates. Similarly, factors like soil type, moisture levels, and the plant's overall health also play a significant role in its survival.
