Värvitäpsemat, also known as *värkäväiset* or *värkäväiset tärpättiä*, are a traditional Finnish folk remedy derived from birch tar, a byproduct of birch bark distillation. The term *värvitäpsemat* literally translates to "itching tar" or "itching pitch," referring to its historical use for treating skin conditions such as scabies, eczema, and psoriasis.

Birch tar is obtained by heating birch bark in a closed container, producing a dark, viscous substance with medicinal properties. When applied topically, it has been used for centuries in Finnish and Scandinavian folk medicine due to its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and keratolytic effects. The remedy was particularly popular in rural areas, where natural resources were readily available.

The preparation often involved mixing birch tar with other ingredients like fat, honey, or alcohol to enhance its effectiveness.
