Värviosakesed, also known as color quarks, are hypothetical elementary particles that are thought to carry the color charge. This concept is a fundamental aspect of the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), which describes the strong nuclear force. The strong force is responsible for binding quarks together to form composite particles like protons and neutrons. Unlike electric charge, which can be positive or negative, color charge comes in three types, often referred to as red, green, and blue, though these labels are purely symbolic and do not relate to visual colors.

In QCD, color quarks are the fundamental constituents of hadrons. Hadrons exist in two main categories: baryons, which are composed of three quarks, and mesons, which are composed of a quark and an antiquark. Crucially, all observable particles, like protons and neutrons, must be "colorless" or "white." This means that the combination of their constituent quarks' color charges must cancel out. For baryons, this occurs when they contain one quark of each color (red, green, blue). For mesons, the color charge of the quark is canceled by the anti-color charge of the antiquark.

The interaction between color quarks is mediated by force-carrying particles called gluons. Gluons themselves carry color charge and can interact with other gluons, making the strong force behavior distinct from electromagnetism. The confinement of quarks within hadrons, meaning they are never observed in isolation, is a direct consequence of the strong force's properties, which increase with distance. Therefore, attempts to separate color quarks require immense energy, which instead results in the creation of new quark-antiquark pairs, forming new color-neutral mesons. The concept of värviosakesed is central to understanding the structure of matter at its most fundamental level.
