In engineering, it can describe a component that transmits loads within a structure. In physics, the term is sometimes used informally to describe the particles or mechanisms that mediate interactions, though the conventional term is force carrier or gauge boson.

In structural engineering, a force-carrying member is any element that transmits forces from one point in a structure to another, typically to supports or to other members. Examples include beams, columns, braces, and trusses. These members resist loads through bending, compression, tension, or shear and define a structure’s load paths. The design and arrangement of force-carrying members determine overall strength, stiffness, stability, and safety.
