Värisynteesi, known in English as color synthesis, refers to the artificial creation or generation of colors. This concept is central to various fields, including art, design, and technology, where understanding how colors are produced and perceived is crucial. In art, color synthesis can involve mixing pigments to achieve a desired hue, or in digital art, manipulating color values in software.

Historically, artists and scientists have explored color synthesis through empirical observation and experimentation. For instance, the development of new pigments and dyes has been a form of color synthesis, expanding the palette available to creators. In the realm of light, color synthesis is fundamental to how we experience color. Additive color synthesis, used in displays like televisions and computer monitors, combines different wavelengths of light (typically red, green, and blue) to produce a spectrum of colors. When these primary colors of light are combined in equal intensity, white light is produced.

Subtractive color synthesis, conversely, deals with pigments and dyes. This method involves absorbing certain wavelengths of light and reflecting others. The primary colors in subtractive synthesis are typically cyan, magenta, and yellow. When these inks or pigments are mixed, they absorb more light, resulting in darker colors. Combining all three subtractive primaries in theory produces black, though in practice, a dark brown or grey is often achieved, necessitating the addition of black ink (K) in printing processes (CMYK).
