Värinsekoitusta, often translated as color mixing, is a fundamental concept in the study and application of color. It refers to the process of combining different colors to produce new ones. This can be achieved through various methods, broadly categorized into additive and subtractive color mixing.

Additive color mixing involves light. When different colored lights are combined, their wavelengths add up. The primary colors of additive mixing are red, green, and blue (RGB). Mixing red and green light produces yellow, green and blue produces cyan, and red and blue produces magenta. Combining all three primary additive colors in equal proportions results in white light. This principle is fundamental to how displays like televisions and computer monitors work.

Subtractive color mixing involves pigments or dyes. When pigments are mixed, they absorb certain wavelengths of light and reflect others. The primary colors of subtractive mixing are typically considered to be cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY). Mixing cyan and magenta pigments produces blue, magenta and yellow produces red, and cyan and yellow produces green. Combining all three primary subtractive colors theoretically results in black, as all light is absorbed. In practice, a pure black is often added (CMYK) for richer blacks and to save on the more expensive colored inks. This method is used in printing and painting.
