Its primary function is to collect exhaust gases from multiple cylinders and direct them into a single pipe, leading to the rest of the exhaust system. In a typical multi-cylinder engine, each cylinder has its own exhaust port. The väljalaskekollektor is bolted to the cylinder head, with individual runners extending from each exhaust port. These runners then merge into a common outlet. Proper scavenging can help to draw out exhaust gases more effectively, allowing for a fresh charge of air and fuel to enter the cylinder more efficiently during the intake stroke.

Materials used for väljalaskekollektors vary. Cast iron is a common and durable choice, especially in older or less performance-oriented vehicles. However, for higher performance applications, stainless steel or tubular steel manifolds are often preferred. These materials are lighter and can withstand higher temperatures, and the tubular design allows for more precise tuning of exhaust gas flow. A cracked or leaking väljalaskekollektor can lead to reduced engine power, increased fuel consumption, and louder exhaust noise, as well as potentially allowing toxic exhaust fumes into the cabin.
