A väitlause, or "thesis statement," is a concise and clear declaration of the main argument or position that a writer or speaker intends to defend or explore in a text, such as an essay, research paper, or academic presentation. Originating from the Latin word *thesis*, meaning "a proposition" or "a formal statement," the term is widely used in academic and scholarly writing to structure arguments effectively.

In Finnish academic discourse, a väitlause serves as the foundation of a dissertation or doctoral thesis, summarizing the central research question or hypothesis. It typically appears in the introduction of a work and outlines the purpose of the investigation, the key claims being made, and the evidence or reasoning that will support them. A well-crafted väitlause is specific, debatable, and focused, guiding the reader through the subsequent analysis or argument.

The structure of a väitlause often includes a topic, a claim about that topic, and a rationale for why the claim matters.
