The absence or significant reduction of these secretions can lead to a range of uncomfortable symptoms and health issues.

Tear deficiency, for instance, can cause dry eyes, leading to irritation, burning sensations, blurred vision, and increased susceptibility to eye infections. Salivary gland dysfunction, or xerostomia, results in a dry mouth, making it difficult to chew, swallow, and speak. It also increases the risk of dental cavities, gum disease, and oral thrush. Reduced mucus production in the respiratory tract can impair the body's ability to trap and remove pathogens, potentially leading to chronic coughs, sinus infections, and other respiratory problems.
