Volummovement is a term used to describe the study and representation of the motion and transformation of volumetric elements within a system. It emphasizes how discrete volumes, such as voxels in a grid or parcels in a fluid, move and change shape over time.

It is not a single theory but a conceptual lens applied across disciplines including fluid dynamics, computer graphics, and medical imaging. In physics, volummovement overlaps with advection and the transport of mass, focusing on the trajectories of volume elements under a velocity field. The mathematics often involves the continuity equation, the velocity field, and related measures such as the divergence and deformation gradient.

In computer graphics and visualization, volummovement refers to updating voxel-based datasets as they flow, deform, or reorganize, for example in simulating liquids or deformable solids. In medical imaging, the term can describe tracking changes in labeled volumes across time sequences, such as tumor growth or brain structure movement.

Common approaches include both Lagrangian methods, which follow individual volume elements, and Eulerian methods, which examine fixed points with fluid properties transported through them. Challenges include preserving volume in abstractions, handling topological changes (merging or splitting), and computational cost.
