A virtuoso is a person who possesses exceptional skill in the performing arts, most often in music. The term comes from the Italian virtù, meaning skill or excellence, with the suffix -oso forming a label for someone of extraordinary ability. In English usage, virtuos o can describe a person (a virtuoso) or a performance that displays remarkable technique (virtuosic).

Characteristics commonly associated with virtuosi include high technical facility, precise control of tone and rhythm, and deep interpretive insight. They often master demanding repertoires and push the limits of technique, while also aiming for expressive clarity and musical communication. The label is descriptive but can carry evaluative connotations about an artist’s prominence within a tradition.
