Virrattavuus is a Finnish term used to describe the ease with which something can flow through a medium or system. It is not a single constant, but a property that depends on the material or boundary, the transported quantity (such as electric charge, a fluid, or heat), and the conditions (temperature, pressure, geometry). In different disciplines, virrattavuus expresses the general tendency of a pathway to transmit a quantity, and it is often related to more specific concepts like conductivity, permeability, or transmissivity.

In electrical engineering and physics, virrattavuus is closely related to conductance. A material with high virrattavuus allows electric current to pass with relatively little resistance, and the conductance is the reciprocal of resistance. In many contexts, the term is used synonymously with or as a component of conductivity, measured in siemens.

In fluid mechanics and hydrogeology, virrattavuus is often associated with the ability of a porous medium to transmit a fluid. It is connected to hydraulic conductivity and, for layered media, to hydraulic transmissivity. Darcy’s law describes the flow rate through a medium as proportional to the hydraulic gradient and the medium’s virrattavuus. Transmissivity, equal to hydraulic conductivity times thickness, expresses how much flow can be transmitted through a layer. Temperature and fluid viscosity, as well as pore structure and pore size distribution, influence virrattavuus in liquids.

Measurement of virrattavuus depends on the context and geometry: electrical measurements determine conductance, while hydrological tests estimate hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity. Because it couples material properties with boundary conditions, virrattavuus is best understood as a contextual property, useful for comparing materials and predicting system behavior under different driving forces.
