Virar is a coastal town in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, India. It forms part of the Mumbai metropolitan region and lies on the Western line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, serving as a major suburban hub north of central Mumbai. The town sits along the Arabian Sea coast near Vasai Creek and is closely linked with the neighboring municipality of Vasai.

Administratively, Virar is part of the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, which governs the Vasai-Virar area within Palghar district. Palghar district was created in 2014 from Thane district to better administer the region.

Over the past decades, Virar has undergone rapid urbanization as a residential suburb of Mumbai. Real estate development, shopping centers, and improved infrastructure have accompanied population growth, though the area still includes older townships and rural pockets in its outskirts.
