Vindkraftens, literally the wind power in Swedish usage, refers to electricity generation from wind energy using turbines. In English the term wind power describes the same concept. Modern wind power relies on horizontal-axis turbines mounted on towers, with blades that capture wind and drive a generator. It is a form of renewable energy and a growing part of electricity systems worldwide.

History and deployment: Wind power has a long history of small-scale use, but modern utility-scale wind farms emerged in the late 20th century. Growth accelerated through the 2000s and 2010s, with onshore wind remaining the largest portion of capacity and offshore wind expanding rapidly thanks to stronger and steadier winds at sea.

Technology and operation: Turbines convert kinetic energy from wind into electrical energy. Typical onshore turbines range from a few hundred kilowatts to several megawatts per unit, while offshore models are often larger and built to withstand harsher marine conditions. Wind farms are connected to electrical grids and must contend with intermittency, requiring grid management, balancing, and, in some cases, storage or backup capacity.

Environmental and social aspects: Wind power produces no emissions during operation and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. Environmental considerations include land use, noise, landscape impact, and effects on wildlife such as birds and bats, which increasingly drive siting and mitigation strategies.

Economics and policy: Costs of wind technology have fallen substantially, making wind often one of the cheapest new electricity sources in many regions. Growth is frequently supported by policy instruments like auctions, subsidies, or tax incentives, along with investments in grid infrastructure and, when needed, energy storage.

Global and regional context: Wind power is a key component of the transition to renewable energy, with significant development in Europe, North America, and Asia. Sweden, among others, has integrated wind into its electricity mix alongside hydropower and other sources.
