villanella
Villanella, or villanella alla napolitana, is a light, rustic vocal music genre that originated in Naples, Italy, in the late 16th century. It emerged as a simpler, popular alternative to the serious madrigal and the more ornate frottola, and was widely performed in courts, theatres, and domestic settings across southern Italy and beyond.
Typically scored for three or more voices, the villanella is primarily homophonic, featuring straightforward, syllabic melodies
The form flourished in the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, but declined by the mid-17th century
