Vibration damping is the process by which vibrational energy is dissipated from a mechanical system, reducing oscillation amplitude and shortening the decay time after excitation. Damping converts kinetic energy into heat or other forms of energy, and arises from several mechanisms including internal friction, interface friction, viscoelastic effects, and fluid resistance.

Damping strategies are categorized as passive, active, or semi-active. Passive damping uses fixed elements such as viscoelastic materials, dashpots, or tuned mass dampers. Active damping employs sensors and actuators with feedback control to oppose motion. Semi-active damping varies properties in real time, for example with controllable dampers that adjust stiffness or damping coefficient in response to motion.

Modeling typically starts with a mass-spring-damper system: m x'' + c x' + k x = F(t). The damping ratio ζ = c / (2 sqrt(mk)); critical damping occurs at c = 2 sqrt(mk). If ζ < 1 the system is underdamped and oscillates with decaying amplitude; if ζ > 1 it is overdamped and returns to equilibrium without oscillation.

Materials and devices. Viscoelastic polymers, rubber, and composite materials provide inherent damping. Devices such as shock absorbers, viscous dampers, and tuned mass dampers introduce additional energy dissipation. In fluid environments, air or liquid resistance also contributes. Advanced systems use magnetorheological or other smart dampers for adjustable damping.

Applications and design considerations. Damping reduces resonant amplification, noise, and fatigue in machinery, automotive suspensions, civil structures, electronics, and aerospace components. Designers balance damping against stiffness, weight, cost, and temperature sensitivity. Damping often degrades with aging and environmental conditions, requiring maintenance or adaptive solutions for sustained performance.
