These plants are found in freshwater environments worldwide, with some species also inhabiting brackish waters. They are characterized by their submerged or floating leaves and are often important components of aquatic ecosystems.

The family includes a variety of growth forms, from submerged rhizomatous species to free-floating plants. Leaves can be linear, strap-like, or ovate, and are typically arranged alternately or in whorls. The flowers of vesipiiriset are often inconspicuous, though some species produce more showy blooms that float on the water's surface. They are typically bisexual and possess three sepals and three petals. Stratiotes, the water-soldier, is a distinctive species with stiff, spiny leaves that floats on the surface.

However, their rapid growth can sometimes lead to issues like clogging waterways or outcompeting native vegetation, particularly for introduced species.
