Veivikäynnistystä, often translated as hand-cranking or manual starting, is a method used to initiate the operation of an engine, particularly older internal combustion engines and some small electric motors. This process involves physically rotating the engine's crankshaft using a removable crank handle. The crank is inserted into a socket on the front of the engine and turned vigorously. This action turns the crankshaft, which in turn moves the pistons within the cylinders, drawing in fuel-air mixture, compressing it, and eventually igniting it, causing the engine to start running under its own power.

The primary advantage of veivikäynnistystä was its simplicity and reliability. It did not require an electrical system, making it suitable for early vehicles and machinery where electrical components were less common or prone to failure. It also provided a direct, mechanical connection to the engine, allowing the operator to feel the engine's resistance and potentially diagnose issues.
