Veehoiduvust, also known as water retention or fluid retention, is a medical condition characterized by the excessive accumulation of fluid within the body's tissues. This can manifest as swelling, particularly in the extremities such as the legs, ankles, and feet, but can also affect other parts of the body.

Several factors can contribute to veehoiduvust. Hormonal changes, such as those experienced during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause, are common culprits. Certain medications, including some blood pressure drugs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and corticosteroids, can also cause fluid retention as a side effect. Medical conditions like heart failure, kidney disease, and liver disease can impair the body's ability to regulate fluid balance, leading to increased retention. Dietary factors, such as a high intake of sodium, can also play a role by causing the body to hold onto more water.

Symptoms of veehoiduvust can range from mild discomfort and a feeling of fullness to more significant swelling that can interfere with daily activities. In some cases, rapid weight gain can be observed. While mild veehoiduvust may resolve on its own or with simple lifestyle adjustments, persistent or severe fluid retention warrants medical attention to identify and address the underlying cause.
