Varvedatering is a geochronological method used to determine the age of sediments. It relies on the presence of varves, which are distinct layers of sediment deposited annually in bodies of water such as lakes or glaciers. These varves are typically composed of two sub-layers: a lighter, coarser layer deposited during the spring and summer melt, and a darker, finer layer deposited during the winter when meltwater and sediment input decrease.

The principle of varvedatering is based on the assumption that each pair of light and dark layers represents one year of deposition. By counting these annual layers, scientists can establish a precise chronology for the sediment sequence. This technique is particularly valuable for reconstructing past environmental conditions and climate changes. For example, the thickness, composition, and color of varves can provide information about temperature, precipitation, and sediment sources.

Varved sediments are most commonly found in glaciated regions where glacial meltwater can transport large amounts of sediment into proglacial lakes. However, varves can also form in other lacustrine environments under specific conditions. The accuracy of varvedatering depends on the clarity and continuity of the varves. Factors such as bioturbation (disturbance by organisms), slumping, or variations in depositional rates can complicate the identification and counting of varves. Cross-validation with other dating methods is often employed to ensure the reliability of varved chronologies.
