Varpöppning is a term used in textile manufacturing to describe the process of separating the warp threads on a loom. This separation is crucial for the weaving process to take place correctly. Warp threads are the lengthwise threads held taut on the loom, and the weft threads are interwoven through them to create fabric. Varpöppning ensures that each weft thread can pass smoothly between the correct warp threads.

There are several methods of varpöppning. In manual looms, the weaver might use a reed or a heddle to lift and lower specific warp threads in a predetermined pattern. This lifting and lowering action creates an opening, or "shed," through which the weft can be passed.
