Valonheijastuvuus, often translated as albedo, is a measure of the diffuse reflection of solar radiation, usually expressed as a fraction or percentage. It is a fundamental property of surfaces that describes how much light they reflect. A surface with a high albedo reflects a large portion of incoming light, appearing bright, while a surface with a low albedo absorbs more light, appearing darker.

The albedo of a surface depends on its physical characteristics, such as its color, texture, and composition. For example, fresh snow has a very high albedo, reflecting over 80% of incident sunlight. In contrast, dark asphalt has a very low albedo, absorbing most of the sunlight and reflecting less than 10%. Different land cover types, such as forests, deserts, and ice sheets, have distinct albedos, which influence the amount of solar energy absorbed by the Earth's surface. Changes in albedo, such as those caused by deforestation or the melting of glaciers, can have significant impacts on regional and global temperatures. For instance, the loss of highly reflective ice and snow cover leads to increased absorption of solar radiation, contributing to further warming in a feedback loop.
