Valgusvõimendid, often translated as light amplifiers or photodetectors with internal gain, are electronic devices that increase the intensity of light signals before they are measured. Unlike simple photodetectors which convert photons into an electrical current, valgusvõimendid incorporate a mechanism that generates additional charge carriers for each incident photon. This internal amplification process leads to a significantly higher output signal for a given light intensity, improving the sensitivity of the detection system.

There are several types of valgusvõimendid, each employing different amplification principles. Avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are a common example, utilizing the phenomenon of impact ionization. When a photon strikes an APD, it creates an electron-hole pair. Under a strong electric field, these carriers gain enough energy to ionize other atoms upon collision, creating more electron-hole pairs. This chain reaction, known as an avalanche, results in a significant multiplication of the initial charge. Another category includes photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), which use a vacuum tube structure. Incident photons strike a photocathode, releasing electrons. These electrons are then accelerated towards a series of dynodes, each at a progressively higher positive voltage. At each dynode, the incoming electrons strike the surface and release multiple secondary electrons, creating a cascade and amplifying the signal. More recently, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) have emerged, which are arrays of APDs operating in Geiger mode, offering high sensitivity and good timing resolution.

Valgusvõimendid are crucial components in a wide range of applications where detecting faint light is essential. These include scientific instrumentation such as telescopes, microscopes, and particle detectors. They are also vital in medical imaging technologies like CT scanners and PET scanners. In telecommunications, they are used in optical receivers for long-distance data transmission. Other fields employing valgusvõimendid include environmental monitoring, industrial automation, and security systems. The choice of valgusvõimendi depends on factors such as the required sensitivity, speed of response, spectral range of light to be detected, and operating conditions.
