Vaihemoottorit, also known as stepper motors, are a type of brushless DC electric motor that divides a full rotation into a number of equal steps. The motor's position can be controlled without a feedback sensor as long as the motor is run within its specified torque and speed capabilities. This is achieved by commanding the motor to move and hold at one of its many steps, making it ideal for precise positioning applications.

These motors have a rotor with permanent magnets or a toothed iron core and a stator with electromagnets. By sequentially energizing the stator coils, a rotating magnetic field is created, which causes the rotor to align with the field. The discrete steps are a result of the rotor's teeth or magnetic poles aligning with the energized stator poles.

Vaihemoottorit are widely used in applications requiring precise angular movement and open-loop control. Examples include 3D printers, CNC machines, robotic arms, disk drives, and automated manufacturing equipment. Their ability to hold a position, even when stationary, and their relatively simple control mechanism contribute to their popularity in these fields.

There are several types of vaihemoottorit, including permanent magnet, variable reluctance, and hybrid. Hybrid motors combine features of both permanent magnet and variable reluctance motors, offering higher torque and better step resolution. The choice of motor type depends on the specific requirements of the application, such as torque, speed, and positional accuracy.
