Vaihdevipu is the Finnish term for the gear shift lever, a control in vehicles with manual transmissions that allows the driver to select the appropriate gear ratio. It is a mechanical interface that communicates the driver's choice to the gearbox, enabling changes in speed and engine performance.

The device is typically mounted on the floor between the front seats or on the steering column, and it is connected to the gearbox by a mechanical linkage or cables. In newer designs, it may be connected to the transmission via an electronic actuator in a shift-by-wire system. The lever is usually fitted with a handle or knob and may include a locking mechanism or button to prevent accidental engagement of a different gear.

Operation generally requires the driver to depress the clutch pedal to disengage the engine from the transmission before moving the lever from one gear to another. The common layout for a manual transmission is an H-pattern, with gears arranged in a conventional sequence and reverse in a distinct position. Variations exist, including short-throw shifters for quicker, sportier shifts and column-mounted or electronic selectors in some modern cars.
