Vízkövesedés, also known as limescale or calcification, is the process by which mineral deposits, primarily calcium carbonate, accumulate on surfaces. This phenomenon is commonly observed in areas where hard water, water containing a high concentration of dissolved minerals, flows or is heated. The minerals precipitate out of the water and form a hard, chalky residue.

The primary components of vízkövesedés are calcium and magnesium ions, which are naturally present in many water sources. When water is heated, its ability to hold these dissolved minerals decreases, leading to their deposition. This is why vízkövesedés is frequently seen in appliances like kettles, coffee makers, dishwashers, and washing machines, as well as on plumbing fixtures, showerheads, and inside pipes.

Beyond being unsightly, vízkövesedés can cause significant problems. In appliances, it can reduce their efficiency, increase energy consumption, and shorten their lifespan by obstructing water flow and insulating heating elements. In plumbing, it can lead to blockages, reduced water pressure, and corrosion. The buildup can also harbor bacteria.

Preventing and removing vízkövesedés often involves water softening techniques, such as using ion-exchange filters to remove calcium and magnesium ions before they enter the water supply. Regular cleaning and descaling with acidic solutions, like vinegar or specialized descaling agents, are also common methods for tackling existing deposits. Understanding the composition of local water is key to managing this common issue.
