umiakse

Umiakse is a type of skin boat traditionally used by the Inuit people of the Arctic. It is similar in construction to the kayak, but generally larger and often covered with sealskin. Historically, umiakse were used for hunting, transportation, and as a general-purpose vessel on the sea and coastal waters. Their design allowed for stability and maneuverability in the often harsh Arctic environment.

The construction of an umiakse involved a wooden or bone frame, over which stretched and sewn animal skins, typically sealskin, were tightly fitted.
