Ultraääniohjaus, known in English as ultrasound guidance, refers to the use of diagnostic ultrasound to visualize anatomical structures and guide medical procedures in real-time. This technique is widely employed in various medical specialties, including radiology, anesthesiology, cardiology, and surgery.

The core principle of ultrasound guidance lies in the use of high-frequency sound waves, which are transmitted into the body by a transducer. These sound waves reflect off different tissues and organs, creating echoes that are detected by the transducer. The ultrasound machine then processes these echoes to generate a dynamic, two-dimensional image displayed on a monitor.

During procedures, the transducer is placed on the skin, often with a coupling gel to ensure good contact and sound transmission. The real-time image allows the clinician to identify target structures, such as veins, arteries, nerves, or organs, and to steer instruments, like needles or catheters, with precision to the desired location. This enhances accuracy, reduces the risk of complications, and can make procedures less invasive and more comfortable for the patient.

Common applications include guided biopsies, central venous catheter placement, nerve blocks for pain management and anesthesia, joint injections, and fluid aspiration. The non-ionizing nature of ultrasound makes it a safe imaging modality, suitable for pregnant women and repeated use. Its portability and relatively low cost also contribute to its widespread adoption in healthcare settings.
