Anesthesiology is the medical specialty focused on the total care of patients undergoing surgical procedures, including the administration of anesthesia, analgesia, and perioperative medicine. It encompasses preoperative assessment, anesthesia planning, airway management, intraoperative monitoring, and postoperative care, with an emphasis on patient safety and comfort.

Historically, anesthesia emerged in the mid-19th century with the introduction of ether and modernized with advances in inhalational agents, regional anesthesia, airway devices, and continuous monitoring. The field evolved to include not only anesthesia delivery but also perioperative medicine, pain management, critical care, and resuscitation.

Core responsibilities include developing an individualized anesthesia plan based on medical history and surgical factors; selecting appropriate anesthesia type (general, regional, local with sedation); securing and maintaining the airway; monitoring vital signs and organ function; and providing analgesia during and after surgery. In addition to intraoperative duties, anesthesiologists oversee postoperative recovery, pain control, and, when needed, critical care management and resuscitation. They also contribute to obstetric, pediatric, and ambulatory anesthesia, and to chronic pain management programs.

Training typically involves completing medical school, followed by specialized residency in anesthesiology, commonly four years in some countries, and board certification. Anesthesiologists work alongside nurse anesthetists, anesthesiologist assistants, surgeons, and other clinicians. The specialty continues to advance through improved pharmacology, monitoring technology, and collaborative care pathways designed to enhance safety and recovery after surgery.
