Ultralightweight is a term used across industries to describe materials, structures, or products that have exceptionally low mass relative to their size or function. There is no universal definition or standard; the term is used descriptively and is often accompanied by quantitative metrics such as density, strength, or performance.

In materials science, ultralightweight materials aim for very low density while maintaining adequate mechanical properties. Examples include aerogels, which are highly porous solids with densities ranging from a few to a few hundred kilograms per cubic meter; hollow-core foams and certain sandwich composites; carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers with lightweight cores; and engineered porous metals and polymers. Ultralightweight concrete, using hollow aggregates, has densities far below ordinary concrete and offers lower thermal conductivity and weight for building elements.

In textiles and gear, ultralightweight fabrics and components emphasize low grammage, high compressibility, and fast drying. They are common in outdoor equipment such as tents, rain shells, pack covers, and ultralight sleeping systems, often trading some durability for weight savings.

In aerospace, automotive, and civil engineering, ultralightweight design seeks to reduce mass to improve efficiency and performance. Techniques include the use of advanced composites, honeycomb cores, and lightweight sandwich structures. These choices involve balancing weight against strength, stiffness, thermal properties, cost, and manufacturability.

Terminology varies by field; ultralightweight may appear in marketing or product naming. Because density is a primary criterion, the term is most meaningful when accompanied by specific measurements and performance data.
