Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation, making it a safe option for pregnant women, children, and repeated examinations. It is widely used in various medical fields, including obstetrics and gynecology to monitor fetal development, cardiology to examine the heart, abdominal imaging to assess organs like the liver, kidneys, and gallbladder, and musculoskeletal imaging to visualize muscles, tendons, and joints. The clarity of the images can depend on factors such as the depth of the structure being examined and the patient's body composition. A gel is typically applied to the skin to ensure good contact between the transducer and the body, and to facilitate the transmission of sound waves.
