Typing, or keyboarding, is the act of composing text by pressing keys on a keyboard or other input device. It is a fundamental skill for using computers, tablets, and smartphones. Proficiency is usually measured by speed and accuracy, with touch typing enabling users to type without looking at the keys. Typing also encompasses voice or handwriting input in broader discussions, but it typically refers to keyboard entry.

Historically, typing began with mechanical typewriters in the 19th century and evolved through electric and electronic keyboards. The dominant layout is QWERTY, devised to reduce jams on early typewriters, but alternative layouts such as Dvorak and Colemak exist and are promoted to reduce finger movement. Today, typing also occurs on touchscreens with on-screen keyboards, and on ergonomic or split keyboards designed to improve posture and comfort.

Proficiency is built through practice and instruction. Touch typing trains all fingers to return to home keys and relies on muscle memory to increase speed while maintaining accuracy. Common measures include words per minute (WPM) and accuracy rate. Tools for learning range from web-based tutors and structured courses to game-like programs; regular practice is typically required to reach high levels.

In professional and academic settings, typing is a central productivity skill. Typos and misstrikes can hinder readability, while autocorrect and predictive text can both help and hinder accuracy. Ergonomic considerations—proper chair height, wrist alignment, and keyboard position—are important to prevent strain. The rise of mobile devices has diversified typing practices with swiping keyboards and dictation, but keyboarding remains a core digital literacy skill.
