Tutkaaluksissa refers to ships that are equipped with radar systems. In maritime contexts, a radar on a vessel is used to detect other ships, landmasses, and weather features in the surrounding area, particularly in low visibility or at night. Radar-equipped ships are common among commercial merchant vessels, fishing fleets, coast guard crafts, research ships, and naval units.

A typical radar suite on such ships includes a navigation radar for collision avoidance, surface-search radars for detecting nearby vessels and obstacles, and often weather radar or integrated sensors. Modern vessels may combine radar data with AIS (Automatic Identification System) and electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS) to enhance situational awareness. Radars operate by emitting radio waves and interpreting echoes; the range and bearing to targets are derived from the travel time and the angle of the returned signal. These systems are usually mounted on masts or superstructures and can be mechanically or electronically scanned.

Historically, radar on ships began to spread in the 1940s and became widespread in the following decades. Advances have led to multi-function, high-resolution systems capable of tracking numerous targets, penetrating weather, and integrating with other navigation and safety systems.

Applications of tutkaaluksissa include navigation and collision avoidance, search and rescue, maritime surveillance, harbor and port operations, and general safety at sea. Regulators such as the International Maritime Organization have established standards and requirements for radar equipment on ships of different sizes and operations.
