Turvallisuussykkeä is a Finnish neologism formed from turvallisuus (safety, security) and syke (pulse, rate). The term is not part of formal safety engineering nomenclature and does not have a single, official definition in standards or manuals. In Finnish public discourse it is sometimes used metaphorically to describe the “pulse” or tempo of safety work: how actively a system, organization, or process monitors hazards, conducts safety checks, and responds to incidents.

In practice, turvallisuussykkeä refers to the ongoing cadence of safety-related activities rather than a concrete technical device. It can encompass metrics such as incident frequency, audit or training cycles, and the regularity of risk assessments or automated monitoring. The emphasis is on continuous attention to safety, rather than one-off measures.

The expression is most commonly encountered in media, management discussions, and safety culture commentary. Some writers use it to distinguish between a high, proactive safety tempo and a passive or reactive approach, while others treat it as a qualitative descriptor of safety activity rather than a formal concept. Because turvallisuussykkeä is informal, its meaning can be ambiguous outside the context in which it is used, and it is not standardized in safety engineering documentation.
