Belonging to the thrush family (Turdidae), it is renowned for its melodious and complex song, which is particularly prominent during the breeding season. The species is often associated with dense, shaded woodlands, where it nests on the ground among thick vegetation.

The tulutauttuis is characterized by its olive-brown upperparts, a buffy underbelly, and a distinctive white eye-ring.
