Tulosesitykset, also known as diabetes mellitus, is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. These conditions occur when the body either does not produce enough insulin, does not properly use the insulin it produces, or both. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood. In diabetes, the body's ability to regulate blood sugar is impaired, leading to elevated glucose levels.

There are three main types of diabetes:

1. Type 1 diabetes: This is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. People with type 1 diabetes usually require insulin injections or an insulin pump to manage their blood sugar levels.

2. Type 2 diabetes: This is the most common type, accounting for about 90-95% of all diabetes cases. It often develops in adults but can also occur in children and adolescents. Type 2 diabetes is typically associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and a poor diet. However, it can also be influenced by genetic factors.

3. Gestational diabetes: This type occurs during pregnancy and usually resolves after the baby is born. However, women who have had gestational diabetes are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Symptoms of diabetes may include frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow-healing sores. If left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, nerve damage, and foot problems. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and medication (if prescribed) are essential for managing diabetes.
