tukkipuun

Tukkipuu refers to timber that has been felled and processed into logs, typically for use in the lumber industry. This term is commonly used in forestry and wood processing contexts, particularly in Nordic countries. The process of creating tukkipuu involves harvesting trees, then cutting them into specific lengths and diameters suitable for sawing into lumber, or for other purposes such as pulpwood or firewood.

The quality and dimensions of tukkipuu are important factors determining its value and end-use. Logs intended for sawn timber are generally of higher quality and larger diameter than those designated for pulp or energy. Forest management practices aim to produce trees that will yield high-quality tukkipuu, considering species, growth conditions, and silvicultural treatments.

After harvesting, logs are often transported from the forest to a sawmill or processing facility. This transportation can occur via various methods, including logging trucks, rail, or historically, by floating logs down rivers, a practice known as log driving. At the mill, tukkipuu is sorted, debarked, and then sawn into planks, boards, and other lumber products. The residual parts of the log not suitable for sawn timber may be further processed into wood chips, pulp, or used as fuel.
