Tuhkat is the Finnish term for ashes, the residues left after burning organic matter. It can refer to household ashes from wood stoves, fireplaces, and cooking fires; industrial ashes such as fly ash and bottom ash from coal-fired plants; and naturally occurring volcanic ash that has settled from eruption plumes. The plural form tuhkat is used in Finnish to cover these varied contexts.

The composition of tuhkat depends on the original material and the combustion process. Wood ash typically contains calcium and potassium compounds, silica and other minerals, and is usually alkaline due to calcium carbonate.
