In practice, trälager can be outdoors on ground or in covered buildings. Timber must be stored in a way that preserves quality, protects against weather damage, and allows for safe handling. Logs are typically stacked in rows with spacing to promote drainage and air circulation, while sawn timber is laid in stacks with spacers (stickers) to enable even drying and ventilation. Stock is often organized by species, dimension, grade, and moisture content, and is tracked in inventories for planning and traceability.

Management considerations include inventory control, labeling, and documentation of origin and treatment. Regular inspections help detect moisture-related deterioration, mold, insect infestations, or warping.
