The term gained prominence in the United States during the Progressive Era, particularly under President Theodore Roosevelt, who was famously nicknamed "the trust-buster."

The goal of trustbusting is not to penalize success but to prevent companies from wielding excessive market power. This power can allow them to dictate prices, limit innovation, and engage in unfair practices that disadvantage smaller businesses and consumers. Antitrust laws, such as the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 and the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914, provide the legal framework for government intervention.
