Sherman

Sherman is a surname and a given name of English origin. It is used for a number of towns and geographic features in North America and for various objects named in honor of the person bearing the name.

William Tecumseh Sherman (1820–1891) was a prominent American military officer during the Civil War. A Union general, he commanded operations in the Western Theater and is best known for his 1864 March to the Sea from Atlanta to Savannah. His campaigns employed aggressive tactics aimed at disrupting the Confederacy’s war infrastructure. He later served as the Commanding General of the United States Army from 1869 to 1883.

The M4 Sherman, officially the Medium Tank M4, was the standard U.S. Army tank in World War II and was named after General Sherman. Produced from 1941 to 1945 and used by Allied forces around the world, it played a central role in armored operations and remains a widely recognized symbol of American armored warfare.

Places named Sherman include Sherman, Texas; Sherman, Connecticut; and Sherman Counties in Oregon and in Kansas. The name also appears in other towns, counties, and waterways.
