Trombocitadiszfunkció refers to a condition where platelets, also known as thrombocytes, do not function properly. Platelets are small, irregular-shaped blood cells that play a crucial role in hemostasis, the process of stopping bleeding. They aggregate at the site of an injury to form a plug and release substances that promote blood clotting. When platelets are dysfunctional, their ability to perform these essential tasks is impaired.

There are various causes of trombocitadiszfunkció. It can be congenital, meaning it is present from birth due to genetic abnormalities affecting platelet structure or function. Acquired trombocitadiszfunkció can develop later in life due to factors such as certain medications, infections, autoimmune diseases, or other underlying medical conditions. Some common inherited platelet disorders include Glanzmann thrombasthenia and Bernard-Soulier syndrome, which affect specific proteins on the platelet surface essential for aggregation.

The symptoms of trombocitadiszfunkció can range from mild to severe and often manifest as bleeding problems. These may include easy bruising, prolonged bleeding after cuts or surgery, nosebleeds that are difficult to stop, bleeding gums, and in women, heavy menstrual periods. In more severe cases, spontaneous bleeding into the skin, joints, or internal organs can occur.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. A complete blood count (CBC) can assess the number of platelets, while a platelet function test, such as platelet aggregometry, measures how well platelets respond to stimuli that should cause them to clump together.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity of the dysfunction. For mild cases, observation may be sufficient. For more significant bleeding or in preparation for surgery, treatments might include platelet transfusions to provide functional platelets, or medications that help improve platelet function or reduce bleeding. Avoiding medications that interfere with platelet function, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), is also often recommended.
