trivialisation

Trivialisation (British English) or trivialization (American English) is the act of treating something as trivial or insignificant, or, in mathematics, a specific construction that identifies a complex object with a simple product-like one.

In everyday language the term is often used critically when someone downplays a problem, pain, or experience, potentially reducing its perceived seriousness and undermining affected individuals. It can occur in discussions of violence, illness, mental health, discrimination, or cultural practices. Proponents argue it can de-stigmatize or simplify; critics say it erodes empathy and overlooks systemic factors. The concept is discussed in media studies, ethics, and social psychology, where trivialisation is seen as a potential obstacle to acknowledgment and response.

In mathematics, particularly differential geometry and topology, a trivialization describes a local or global identification of a fiber bundle with a product. For a fiber bundle π: E → B with typical fiber F, a trivialization over an open set U⊆B is a homeomorphism φ: π^{-1}(U) → U×F that respects projection. If such a trivialization exists for all of B, the bundle is called trivial. Over overlaps U_i∩U_j, the changes between trivializations are given by transition functions g_{ij}: U_i∩U_j → Aut(F), encoding how the bundle twists. Global trivialization of a vector bundle means an isomorphism with B×F; obstructions are detected by characteristic classes.
