Unlike a standard potentiometer, which is typically used as a user-adjustable control, trimpots are usually mounted on a printed circuit board and adjusted with a small screwdriver to set a specific circuit value. They are often used to calibrate or fine-tune electronic circuits.

Trimpots come in various forms, with common types including horizontal and vertical mounting configurations. The adjustment mechanism is usually a screw that moves a wiper along a resistive element. The resistance value is determined by the position of this wiper. They are available in a wide range of resistance values, from a few ohms to several megaohms, and are rated for specific power dissipation.

The primary application of trimpots is in circuits where precise adjustments are needed during manufacturing or maintenance. Examples include setting voltage levels, adjusting gain in amplifiers, or calibrating sensors. Their small size and low cost make them suitable for incorporation into many electronic devices. While they are adjustable, they are not intended for continuous or frequent user interaction. Overadjustment or improper use can lead to damage to the trimpot or the circuit it is in.
