trepimajade

trepimajade is a proposed but not yet realized concept for a type of multi-generational housing. The term is a portmanteau derived from "trep" (a reference to an apartment) and "majad" (a Finnish word for houses). The core idea behind trepimajade is to create residential structures that seamlessly blend individual apartment living with communal house-like amenities and social spaces.

The envisioned trepimajade would consist of private, self-contained dwelling units, similar to apartments, each with its own kitchen, bathroom, and living area. However, these units would be clustered around shared facilities that go beyond typical apartment building amenities like laundry rooms or gyms. These shared spaces would be designed to foster a sense of community and encourage interaction among residents, resembling the shared resources and social atmosphere found in a traditional house or a cohousing development.

Examples of these communal areas could include large, shared kitchens and dining spaces for communal meals, workshops or craft rooms, shared gardens or outdoor recreational areas, and multipurpose rooms for social gatherings, events, or childcare. The design aims to offer the privacy and independence of apartment living while mitigating potential isolation by providing opportunities for shared activities, mutual support, and a stronger neighborhood feel. The concept is still in its early stages of development and has not yet been widely implemented in architectural practice.
