Traumatology is the medical specialty dedicated to the study, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of traumatic injuries. A traumatologist is a physician who specializes in the care of patients with severe injuries resulting from events such as traffic accidents, falls, or violence. The field often overlaps with trauma surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, and other surgical disciplines, and may be pursued as orthopaedic trauma, spinal trauma, or general trauma care.

Trauma care providers coordinate multidisciplinary teams in acute care settings, typically in trauma centers. Responsibilities include rapid assessment and resuscitation, imaging interpretation, damage-control surgery when needed, stabilization of fractures and soft-tissue injuries, management of chest and abdominal trauma, and coordination with rehabilitation services and follow-up care. In some systems, trauma surgeons lead the program, while in others orthopedic or neurosurgical specialists assume primary roles for specific injuries.

Education and training: Graduates complete a medical degree, then residency in general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, or related fields, followed by a fellowship in trauma surgery or acute care surgery, and board certification where available. Ongoing professional development and participation in trauma registries and quality-improvement initiatives are common.

Work settings include Level I and II trauma centers, community hospitals with trauma services, and military medical facilities. Traumatology also involves injury prevention, disaster response, and research into mechanisms of injury, outcomes, and system-level improvements.
