A transferlaken, also called a sliding sheet, is a fabric sheet used in healthcare settings to facilitate patient transfers and repositioning. It is designed to reduce friction between the patient and surfaces such as beds, chairs, or stretchers, thereby easing movement for caregivers and helping prevent skin damage and back injuries.

Transferlakens come in reusable and disposable forms. They are typically made from low-friction materials such as polyester, cotton blends, or coated fabrics. Some versions include handles or reinforced grip edges to improve control during transfers. They vary in size to fit standard beds and chairs and can be used alone or in combination with other transfer devices, such as hoists or transfer boards.

Common uses include moving a patient from bed to chair, side-to-side repositioning in bed, and assisting with turning or adjusting position without lifting the patient directly. Proper technique involves clear communication with the patient, maintaining good body mechanics, stabilizing the bed and any medical equipment, and coordinating with assistive personnel. The sheet should be placed under the patient with careful alignment, edges tucked appropriately, and movement performed gradually to minimize shearing and discomfort.

Care and maintenance depend on the type. Reusable transferlakens are usually washed and disinfected according to facility protocols and inspected for wear before reuse. Disposable sheets are discarded after a single use. Regular inspection for tears or slick surfaces is recommended, and sheets should be stored clean and dry when not in use.
