Trafikförsäkring is the mandatory third-party liability insurance for motor vehicles in Sweden. It is required by Trafikförsäkringslagen and applies to vehicles that are used on public roads. The purpose is to ensure that injuries and property damage caused by the vehicle to others are compensated, regardless of the driver’s fault.

What it covers: Trafikförsäkring provides compensation for bodily injury to other people, medical costs, rehabilitation, and damage to other people’s property caused by the insured vehicle. It may also cover certain legal costs related to claims arising from an accident, within the limits of the policy and applicable law. The insurance is designed to protect victims rather than the vehicle owner.

What it does not cover: The driver’s own injuries or losses, and damage to the insured vehicle itself are not covered by trafikförsäkring. Theft, fire, vandalism, or damage to the vehicle are typically addressed by optional or additional coverage such as vagnskadeförsäkring (comprehensive) or halvförsäkring (partial). These additional covers can be purchased separately or bundled with the basic liability policy.

Legal and practical aspects: Having trafikförsäkring is a requirement for driving on Swedish roads. If you are involved in an accident and you lack coverage, you can face penalties and may be held financially liable for damages. In cross-border contexts within the EU/EEA, the liability coverage generally applies in accordance with the relevant regulations, and proof of insurance may be required when driving abroad.

Obtaining and renewal: The insurance is arranged through an insurance company, often when purchasing or registering a vehicle. Proof of trafikförsäkring may be requested by authorities during police stops, registration checks, or vehicle inspections.
