Topoloogiate (topologies) are mathematical structures on a set X that specify which subsets of X are open. A topology T on X is a collection of subsets of X satisfying four axioms: the empty set and X belong to T; arbitrary unions of members of T are in T; and finite intersections of members of T are in T. The pair (X, T) is called a topological space. Discrete topology has T = P(X); indiscrete (trivial) topology has only ∅ and X; the standard topology on the real numbers is generated by open intervals.

A central concept is a basis: a collection B of open sets is a basis if every open set is a union of sets from B. A subbasis S generates a topology via finite intersections to obtain a basis. The product topology on a product X×Y is the coarsest topology making projection maps continuous; the subspace topology on a subset A⊆X is given by intersections A ∩ U with U open in X.

Continuity between topological spaces is defined by preimages: a function f: X→Y is continuous if the preimage of every open set in Y is open in X. Convergence is described using nets (generalizing sequences) to handle spaces where sequences are insufficient. Basic constructions include taking subspaces, products, and quotient spaces, each yielding new topologies.

Important properties include separation axioms (T0, T1, T2/Hausdorff), compactness, connectedness, and metrizability. Topoloogiate provide a unifying language for analysis, geometry, and many areas of pure mathematics, and they underpin methods in applied fields such as data analysis through topological data analysis and persistent homology.
