Toisiolähettimiä, known in English as transponders, are electronic devices that generate a response upon receiving an external signal. This response is typically a retransmission of the received signal, often with a modification or additional information. They are commonly used in a wide range of applications, including aviation, maritime safety, and access control systems.

In aviation, transponders are crucial for air traffic control. Aircraft are equipped with transponders that receive interrogation signals from ground-based radar. In response, the transponder broadcasts its identity, altitude, and other flight data back to the radar system, allowing controllers to track and manage air traffic effectively. This system is also known as the Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) system.

Maritime transponders, such as Automatic Identification System (AIS) devices, serve a similar purpose for ships. They broadcast information like ship identity, position, and course, which is received by other vessels and shore-based stations. This enhances navigational safety, particularly in busy shipping lanes and poor visibility.

In other contexts, transponders can be used for identification and authentication. For example, key fobs used for keyless entry systems in cars or buildings often contain transponders that communicate with a reader to grant access.
